RIP Howard Cable, dear friend and musical iconDestiny fulfilled …. the meeting of Cable and Canadian Brass was ordained!
The Brass was a group of five young players eager to take on the music world in an absolutely unknown field of endeavor. Howard was the Mozart of Canada, able to create a new musical work as fast as he could write it down.
At every turn Howard was available to give us the music we needed to go to the next step, writing over sixty works especially for Canadian Brass. “Saddles and Saloons” for our first tour of Saskatchewan, “Newfoundland Sketch” for our annual trip to Newfoundland, “Triphonic Fanfare” to feature our students out in Banff where we were both in residence and three important pieces for our invitation to China in 1977: “Flight of the Tuba Bee,” “Lassus’ Trombone” and “Carnival of Venice.” And then of course there was always a heavy dose of Canadiana, from Calixa Lavallée’s “La Rose Nuptiale” to several special arrangements of our national anthem “O Canada.”
It shall be the recording projects that will keep Howard Cable’s name out in front of an international audience:
